The US administration is now saying they only want immigrants who can “stand on their own two feet.”
This is policy for a fictional world.
No one stands on their own 2 feet. Certainly not economically. We all drive to work on the roads we built together, we all assume the services and protections we provide each other through the state. In fact, almost everything we accomplish “for ourselves” is dependant on the rule of law that assumes everyone else will operate by common standards and that those standards will be enforced by, you guessed it, someone else.
Even more important though, none of us have ever stood on our own two feet as human beings. We are inherently dependant by design. We all need emotional and spiritual support. We all need communities to define ourself in and against. In fact, we are so interdependent that solitary confinement is considered torture.
Understand this, “your own two feet” is a myth. So don’t let mass confusion about immigration sell you a story about your own independence that’s not true. Believing it won’t serve you well.
